Year 12
Year 12 students study the new OCR Mathematics A-level for first teaching from September 2017.
Normal Mathematics
AS Level / A Level Mathematics is a broad based mathematics course that covers the essential elements of pure mathematics and also covers applied mathematics through the study of statistics and mechanics. Students learn essential mathematical skills and processes whilst developing approaches to problem solving and mathematical argument, language and proof. Mathematical modelling techniques are also studied as approaches to solving applied mathematics problems in Statistics and Mechanics. In particular there is a focus on the use of technology including the study of a large data set in statistics.
Pure mathematics focuses on pure mathematical concepts and skills. The subject areas covered are: Proof, Algebra and Functions, Coordinate Geometry in the x-y Plane, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical Methods and Vectors.
Statistics focuses on the techniques required to carry out exploratory data analysis, modelling, sampling and testing. The subject areas covered are: Statistical Sampling, Data Presentation and Interpretation, Probability, Statistical Distributions and Statistical Hypothesis Testing.
Mechanics focuses on applying mathematical problem solving to mechanics. The subject areas covered are: Quantities and Units on Mechanics, Kinematics, Moments and Forces and Newton’s Laws.
Further Mathematics
The
AS Level / A Level Further Mathematics course is broader and deeper than A-level mathematics and introduces new mathematical concepts that have wide applications in engineering, physical sciences, economics and computing. The Pure Core provides the foundations for further mathematical study upon which learners study Statistics and Mechanics. There will also be overarching themes of mathematical argument, language and proof, mathematical problem solving and mathematical modelling that will be running throughout the course.
In
Pure Core, students extend and deepen their knowledge of proof, algebra and vectors studied in A Level Mathematics. They will also broaden their knowledge into other areas of pure mathematics that underpin the further study of mathematics. The subject areas covered are: Proof, Complex Numbers, Matrices, Further Vectors, Further Algebra, Series, Hyperbolic Functions, Further Calculus, Polar Coordinates, and Differential Equations.
In
Statistics, students explore the theory which underlies the statistics content in A-Level Mathematics, as well as extending their knowledge of statistical concepts and techniques. The subject areas covered are: Probability, Discrete Random Variables, Continuous Random Variables, Linear Combinations of Random Variables, Hypothesis Tests and Confidence Intervals, Chi-squared Tests, Non-parametric Tests, Correlation and Linear Regression
In
Mechanics, students extend their knowledge of particles, kinematics and forces from A Level Mathematics, using their extended pure mathematical knowledge to explore more complex physical systems. The subject areas covered are: Dimensional Analysis, Work, Energy and Power, Impulse and Momentum, Centre of Mass, Motion in a Circle and Linear Motion under a Variable Force.
Year 13
Year 13 students study the legacy OCR course for A-level Mathematics and A-level Further Mathematics.
AS Mathematics
- Core Mathematics 1 extends students’ learning in familiar GCSE topics such as quadratics, indices and straight line graphs. Students will also be introduced to new topics, the key new material being differentiation. This is a non-calculator module.
- Core Mathematics 2 builds on students’ GCSE trigonometry and algebra knowledge as well as introducing the new topics: sequences, series, integration and logarithms.
- Probability and Statistics 1 Students will already be familiar, from GCSE, with ways of displaying and interpreting data such as scatter diagrams and box plots. In this module students will build on this knowledge with a more formal approach to statistics and probability, including work on discrete random variables and bivariate data.
A2 Mathematics
- Core Mathematics 3 extends the core work completed in the AS with further work on algebra, functions, trigonometry, the exponential function, differentiation, integration and numerical methods.
- Core Mathematics 4 extends the core work completed in Core Mathematics 3, notably introducing differential equations. A new topic, vectors, is also included in this module.
- Mechanics 1 is about using mathematical models of physical situations to investigate the forces causing an object to move or remain stationary as well as studying the motion of objects that are thrown or dropped.
To achieve this, students study force as a vector, kinematics, equilibrium of a particle, Newton’s laws of motion and linear momentum.
AS Further Mathematics
- Further Pure Mathematics 1 introduces some key topics in pure mathematics, with a more rigorous proof based approach than the Core modules. In particular, students study matrices, complex numbers, series and proof by induction.
- Decision Mathematics is the use of discrete maths to solve practical problems such as how to deliver all the mail to every street in a village in the shortest time. The aim is to derive algorithms (sets of instructions) that find efficient solutions. The problems investigated include ordering numbers, various problems involving networks and linear programming.
- Probability and Statistics 2 covers some essential topics for application in many other subjects such as biology and economics. This includes continuous random variables, the normal distribution, the Poisson distribution, sampling and hypothesis testing.
A2 Further Mathematics
A further three modules are covered from the following:
- Further Pure Mathematics 2 covers rational functions and graphs, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, calculus, and numerical methods.
- Further Pure Mathematics 3 covers differential equations, vectors, complex numbers, and groups.
- Mechanics 2 covers centre of mass, equilibrium of a rigid body, motion of a projectile, uniform motion in a circle, coefficient of restitution and impulse, energy, work and power.
- Mechanics 3 covers equilibrium of rigid bodies in contact, elastic strings and springs, impulse and momentum in two dimensions, motion in a vertical circle, linear motion under a variable force and simple harmonic motion.
- Probability and Statistics 3 covers linear combinations of random variables, confidence intervals and the t-distribution, difference of population means and proportions and the Chi squared tests.
