Athletics is a popular summer sport played by Wilson’s students. With a range of facilities available to students, Wilson’s is strong in athletics and regularly produces athletes of club and county standard. Aided by experienced sports staff, students at Wilson’s are encouraged to develop skills in their particular event and exercise these talents in athletics meets.

During the summer term every student in year 7 and 8 participate in each event and students selected for the teams in years 7 to 10 compete in regular athletics meets against other local schools. Wilson’s also competes in the ESAA national event where we regularly progress from the county round in to the south east regional round. Sutton Borough Sports is also an event that Wilson’s traditionally do well in, most recently winning the event in 2017.

The school also has close ties to local athletics clubs such as Belgrave Harriers, Croydon Harriers and South London Harriers. This often leads to boys competing at club level. Many boys from the school have gone on to compete for Surrey in the national championships in Birmingham and Newcastle.

The school partakes in many track and field events; these include 100m to 1500m races, hurdles, javelin, shot put, discus, long jump, high jump, and triple jump. If there are any events in which the school doesn’t compete, but a student wishes to try, the school makes every effort to accommodate them. Wilson’s often use the David Weir Centre’s facilities in the run up to competitions in order to prepare the boys as well as possible.

Athletics at Wilson’s doesn’t just promote individual achievement; it also encourages students to grow socially and work as a team, as it is team success that allows the school to progress in tournaments and leagues. Any boy attending Wilson’s is encouraged to try for a place in the athletics team, as it is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity.
