Admission Criteria for September 2018 entry

All boys in the current Year 11 at Wilson’s School who meet the normal academic entry criteria will continue into the Sixth Form, if they wish.

Wilson's School welcomes applications from boys from other schools. There are a minimum of 10 places available for external candidates who have a birth date from 1 September 2001 to 31 August 2002*. These places will be offered in rank order of total points score at GCSE calculated in accordance with the provisions below.

* Education out of normal (chronological) age group: Children are normally educated in school with others of their age group; however, in exceptional circumstances parents/carers may seek a place outside of their son’s normal age group. Decisions will be made on the basis of the circumstances of each case. Parents/carers must state clearly why they feel admission to a different year group is in the child’s best interests and will be required to provide recent evidence to support this. Further details of how to make such a request are available from the school.

In the event that external candidates have the same rank order of total points score the application will be determined by a random ballot supervised by an independent person.
Offers for places in the Sixth Form will be made on the basis of the total points score at GCSE (full course only) achieved in Mathematics, the highest English grade (Language or Literature) and the best six results from remaining subjects listed below.

The following subjects count towards the points score:

English Language; English Literature; Mathematics; separate sciences (namely Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or Dual Award Science (Science and Additional Science); French; German; Spanish; (other Modern Foreign Languages will only be considered if they form part of the standard curriculum at the candidate’s current school); History; Geography; Business Studies** or Economics**; Art; Design and Technology**; Music; Latin; Classics; Religious Studies; PE.

An A or B at AS level in any of the above subjects or Information Technology will be counted as 8.5 points. Subjects or qualifications not listed are not accepted. Only one Mathematics qualification is taken into consideration.

** NB: In Business Studies, Economics, and Design and Technology GCSEs, the Attainment 8 point score scales for unreformed GCSEs will be used in 2018, i.e. A* = 8.5, A = 7, B = 5.5, C = 4, D = 3, E = 2, F = 1.5, G = 1.

In 2018, a grade 9 will be counted as 8.5 points in order to ensure that pupils who have undertaken Business Studies, Economics and Design and Technology GCSE are not disadvantaged (since they cannot attain 9 points).

The same normal entry requirements for both internal and external candidates are:

  • a candidate must achieve a total grade points score of at least 56 using the points score calculation described above;
  • a candidate must achieve a grade 6 or above in English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics;
  • a candidate must achieve at least grade 7 in the subjects he wishes to study;
  • where there are special entry requirements to specific courses as set out in the table below, these entry requirements must be met to study the subject.

Right of Appeal

Parents/carers, and in the case of the entry to the Sixth Form the pupil, have a statutory right of appeal against a decision to refuse a place for which a valid application has been made
