BUDDING TALENT

The fast-paced and exciting game of squash continues to thrive at Wilson’s, with students from all year groups enjoying this energetic sport.

The Key Stage Three and Key Stage Five teams have continued their regular Squash training, making use of the local courts and partnership with David Lloyd Purley. The squads consist of between fifteen and twenty boys who have been training every week since September. We have also held trials again this year with over thirty students from year 7 signing up to take part in trial sessions.

Once again both the Key Stage Three and Five teams were entered into the National Schools Squash Competition run by England Squash. The younger players were looking to gain further experience in competitive matches having entered the competition for the first-time last year. The team performed excellently and won their Stage 1 group by beating both Felsted and Brentwood school, with Weldon making his Wilson’s Squash debut. The squad of Bharath (Year Nine), Zeeshaan (Year Eight), Nishith (Year Nine), Sam (Year Nine) and Weldon (Year Seven) all rose to the challenge and produced confident and composed squash to finish top of the group.

Stage Two was a challenging step up, and although the team (with the addition of Rico from Year Nine) were able to beat Reading School, they lost to John Hampden Grammar School before a narrow 3-2 loss to Berkhamsted School. This spelled the end of the National Schools competition for this age group, although valuable experience was gained.

The Key Stage Five team were looking to emulate the heroics of the squad that finished fourth in the country in 2022. This year it was not to be. A younger squad than those who represented Wilson’s in 2022, our current team have a few more years to strengthen their game. They boldly entered the plate competition after finishing third in their Stage 1 group. During this group they managed to beat Trinity School but lost to two strong squash teams from The King’s School (Canterbury) and Sevenoaks School. The team of Thomas (Year Twelve), Zayaan (Year Twelve), Lakshya (Year Ten), Zeeshaan (Year Eight) and Bharath (Year Nine) went on to beat Harvey Grammar School, but lost to Haberdashers' School during Stage 2.

The squads will now look to gain more experience in friendly matches over the rest of the term while continuing training sessions for the rest of the year.
