CHESS IS VERY POPULAR at Wilson's. Most pupils enjoy playing chess when they have the chance, and the various chess clubs the school runs are very popular. This year over 50 pupils have played a total of over 700 games of chess for the school, whilst 200 pupils have official ECF ratings.

The best players at Wilson's play chess for England, and so our first team is one of the best in the country. Other Wilson's teams play with great success. Our teams also perform well in the national schools chess competitions; 2022 was a bumper year, with the school winning two national competitions, Team Chess Challenge and Junior Team Chess Challenge.

Pupils aspiring to be in the chess team or wanting to improve their game should get as much practice as possible. They can do this by going to chess tournaments, by going to lunchtime chess clubs and by playing chess on line. There are also school chess squad sessions on Thursday lunchtimes for the stronger chess players, and chess problem solving club on Friday (Week B). In addition many players also join local chess clubs, the nearest being in Wallington and Coulsdon.
