Year 9 Musicians' Evening

The Year 9 GCSE Musicians delighted a cheerful audience in the Bowden Room on Wednesday evening this week. The repertoire was hugely varied, and the eclectic musical tastes of our students were reflected in their choices of pieces to perform: Ben’s expressive performance of ‘This Nearly Was Mine’ from the popular musical South Pacific was very sensitive, as was Alex’s rendition of Saint-Saëns’ ‘The Swan’ from The Carnival of the Animals.

A slightly more relaxed atmosphere was conjured up during Jihoon’s performance of ‘Blue Moon’ on the clarinet, and Ishaan impressed the audience with his growing dexterity in a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ on the electric guitar. Han-Joon’s performance of the first movement from Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin in E Major, also known as ‘Spring’ from the collection of concertos, The Four Seasons, brought the evening’s performance to a rousing conclusion: he handled the trills in the upper register (mimicking the sound of birdsong in spring) with aplomb.

The Music Department would like to thank all those parents who supported their sons at the event. The standard of performances bodes very well for the future, and with continued dedication, commitment, and diligence, the students could do very well in the performance component of the GCSE course when they come to complete their final recital in Year 11!
