Choral Trip to Cambridge
Last week, our finest singers were fortunate to take part in a singing workshop in the magnificent surroundings of the Chapel of St John’s College in Cambridge.
Mr Weymes - our Choral Director - led the trip so that our students could find out a little more singing scholarships at Cambridge and the levels of commitment each college requires from its Choir Scholars.
The sun shone and those on the trip had the good fortune of bumping into many Old Wilsonians along the way; one was even spotted wearing his Wilson’s football top!
Mrs Straw commented:
All the alumni we met seemed pleased, and rather surprised, to see us.
It was so good to catch up with so many of them, and current Wilson’s students were able to ask questions about the application process to Cambridge.
The singing workshop at St John’s was led by members of the student led Gents choir who generously gave up their time to teach our students the popular song 'Sunny'. Penned in 1963 by Bobby Hebb shortly after the assassination of John F Kennedy, the song was made famous by the pop group Boney M.
After the workshop, our singers were then taken on a tour of the beautiful college grounds by an Old Wilsonian, Theo Horch (Class of 2022), and were given special access to watch the Chapel Choir rehearse with Director of Music, Mr Christopher Gray.
It was splendid to witness the rehearsal process and afterwards we attended the very special Evensong Service in the chapel.
Huge thanks to everyone who took part in organising the trip – in particular, the Director of Music at St John’s, The Gents Choir, and the students themselves, who did the school proud.
