Football Update #12
Editor's note: Thank you to Mr Wells for these excellent reports and photos every week throughout the football season!
Player of the Week
Player of the Week is Ansh (Year 8) and his wand of a left foot; he was the hero for the U13As as he scored the winner in extra time in their national cup tie. In the game Sid (Year 8) made an incredible double save showing catlike reflexes. In a new position Tom (Year 13) was a revelation for the 1st XI, as a number 10 he scored two goals, one a right foot stunner. Another forward to shine was U14As flying winger Jesse (Year 9) who was outstanding taking the Carshalton defence on in the Surrey Cup win.
Team of the Week
The 1st XI continued their good run with their ninth win in eleven games as they beat Esher 4-0. With this win they moved into the Surrey League Semi Finals. The U13A’s are in the last 32 of the national cup after beating Carshalton. They earn team of the week with a fantastic display but also great credit to both teams for an epic school football game.
Match Report
Wilson’s 1st XI 5 VS 2 Victoria College
Wilson’s welcomed visiting Victoria College (Jersey) on Wednesday in what proved a testing friendly. From the opening whistle Wilson’s struggled to find rhythm; passing was hesitant, forward play lacked urgency, and there was little cohesion in the midfield areas. This allowed Victoria College to settle comfortably into the game and strike first, capitalising on a defensive lapse to open the scoring.
Although the goal offered a brief wake-up call, Wilson’s were unable to generate any real attacking threat throughout the first half. The visiting keeper and back four remained largely untested, and Wilson’s found themselves defending for extended periods. The main reason the team reached half-time still in contention was the outstanding performance of Adhrit (Year 13) in goal, who produced several crucial saves, which prevented the scoreline from running away and kept Wilson’s hopes alive despite the lack of attacking impact and defensive organisation.
The second half saw a far more focused and determined Wilson’s side. After a firm half-time talk from Mr Wells, the team returned with clearer structure, greater intensity and renewed purpose. Movement off the ball improved, and wing play started to stretch the Jersey defence. Momentum soon shifted: Nana O (Year 12) converted a well-directed cross from Tom (Year 13), then followed it up with a sharp finish inside the box just minutes after. Although Victoria College managed to equalise, Wilson’s responded again, Nana completed his hat-trick with a well-timed header from a corner and Josh (Year 13) extended the lead from the penalty spot after Tom was brought down. Nana added a fourth goal to his tally. by racing onto Josh’s long pass and finishing confidently in a one-on-one.
Despite a difficult opening spell, Wilson’s showed real resilience and improvement after the break - qualities they will look to carry forward into future fixtures.
