Hans Woyda 2026
We have been entering a team into this Maths competition for many years (the competition itself is 46 years old!). Originally it just involved schools in Sutton but now features 64 schools from across London. The team consists of one student each from Years 9, 11, 12 and 13 and we have yet another strong squad of players who participated.
In the initial round robin section, our first match was against Epsom College which we won 52 points to their 41; even though the teams were evenly matched for a lot of the match, we pulled ahead in the speed round. The team for that match was Richie, Thajan, Egemen and Vedant.
The second match was won even more convincingly, 55 points to 22 against Sutton High. This time the team was Keynes, Aadish, Theo and Vedant.
Our final match of the section pitted us against Nonsuch. It was neck and neck throughout the match and we ended up with a draw of 43 points each! The team was Keynes, Jamie H, Theo and Adhrit S.
Once all the results were totalled for our group, we were the outright winners so qualified for the Knock Out stage of the competition. After a tense wait we found out we would be travelling to Sutton Grammar School (who we beat last year in the semi final round). Our team of Richie, Aadish, Houting and Harry did very well, again in another very close fought match. Unfortunately, it was not to be this time and we lost with 39 points to their 44.

Taking part in Hans Woyda was a great experience, with some very enjoyable (and odd) maths problems. Some of my favourite moments came in the team rounds when we managed to edge the opponent team by one point. Doing maths under very rapid fire time pressure was nerve-wracking but ultimately very rewarding!
I would like to give a massive thank you to Mrs Rata, without whom this opportunity would not be possible.
And Aadish commented:
Thanks to Mrs Rata for organising the competition, we all found it really fun and were very passionate about it, and the maths in the matches was inspiring and exciting too.
We'll come back stronger and prepared for next year!
I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in these matches. The time pressure involved in many questions is intense - so well done!
