National recognition for historian

We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Year 12 student Pavamaan, who was one of just eight students nationwide to be Highly Commended for his essay on Jung Chang and the Cultural Revolution. His exceptional work was recognised at an exclusive ceremony held at the historic Athenaeum Club in London — an occasion made even more special by the presence of Jung Chang herself, the internationally acclaimed author and leading voice on Maoist China.

Pavamaan, accompanied by his parents and Mrs Berry, was personally congratulated by members of the History of Totalitarianism Society, who praised his essay as both thoughtful and deeply insightful. Jung Chang remarked that he had grasped “the heart of the issues” surrounding one of the most complex and turbulent periods in modern history.

This prestigious commendation is a testament to Pavamaan’s intellectual curiosity, analytical skill, and passion for history. It was a true honour to share in this moment of recognition with such a gifted young historian!
