A MUSICAL FEAST FOR THE SEASON
Posted on: | Category:

An exceptionally varied series of musical events in the last four weeks of term began with an invigorating GCSE and A level Recital Evening, and culminated in a joyful Carol Service at Croydon Minster in mid-December, with the school’s choir of over 100 singers performing the usual range of ancient and modern Christmas choral masterpieces, directed skilfully as ever by Mr Christopher Hann, and interspersed with beautiful readings selected by Mrs Fletcher.

Just a few days earlier, every Year 7 pupil had performed on their new instruments in the annual Year 7 Instrumental Programme Showcases. Solos and smaller group items were performed throughout both evenings, directed by the instrumental tutors, introducing the various instrumental and vocal groups. Finally, for the close of each concert, the whole wind band joined forces to perform pieces specifically arranged and conducted by Mr Kramer. On the second Showcase night, several of our students and music team (including Mr Hann and Mr Lissimore) were on the other side of the borough performing in Sutton Sings—a fantastic celebration of choral music from a range of local secondary schools.

And only a few days before that, all of the school’s major musical ensembles joined forces in the Charity Winter Concert! The vigour of Dr Clayden’s Wind Bands and Chamber Wind Ensemble was complemented by the soothing sounds of Senior Strings and some strong performances from a range of smaller ensembles, before the concert reached its climax in orchestral performances directed by Mr Kramer. Music continued until the very last moments of the term, with the Odyssey Big Band’s performances in the final assembly! We look forward with great excitement to 2023, the return of Dr Burton and the opening of our new Britton Centre.
