Sutton Cup Final Wilson’s 1st XI 3 VS 2 Sutton Grammar 1st XI

After a long season during which the 1st XI had beaten the odds time after time, only one game remained as they embarked on their Sutton cup final journey. Impressive wins in the quarters and the semis against Greenshaw and Overton Grange had the team’s spirits flying high in the build-up to the final. A strong Sutton team was to be a more difficult test having beaten us only a short time ago.

The game kicked off at quarter to four, Wilson’s in the yellow and Sutton in the red; for six players in the squad this would be the last time they would wear the famous yellow. The Wilson’s game plan was to capitalise on Sutton players’ mistakes. There were signs in the first ten minutes this could work with the indefatigable Max (Year 12) and Sam (Year 12) intercepting passes in the middle of the park.

The strong start was rewarded after just fifteen minutes when goal machine Harry (Year 12) effortlessly converted a free kick from 30 yards into the roof of the net, putting Wilson’s 1-0 up and silencing the hundred or so supporting Suttonians. Remarkably it was Harry’s 19th goal of the season from centre back!

Sutton came back into the game and a lapse in judgment with one minute to go in the first half saw Sutton equalise and sent the home crowd into wild celebrations. Even though Wilson’s were disappointed to concede late on they felt the game was still there for the winning.

That self-belief was rewarded five minutes into the second half when captain Matt (Year 12) converted a trademark bullet header from a Harry corner to go 2-1 up. Wilson’s were now in control of the game with Freddie (Year 12) and Hari (Year 13) using their experience to dictate the pace of the game. The flustered Sutton side began to make more errors, one of which around the back was capitalised by the lurking Stuart (Year 13), who picked out an accurate pass to Jadon (Year 13) who buried the chance putting Wilson’s 3-1 up.

To their credit Sutton responded well putting Wilson’s under massive pressure. Ben (Year 12) and Rami (Year 13) were like brick walls rebounding all thrown at them. But it’s not a Wilson’s game without a twist to the tale, as Matt almost turned hero to zero after completely swiping the Sutton striker off his feet in the penalty area with three minutes to go. Craig (Year 13), who has had an incredible season, was unfortunate not to save the penalty as it bounced over his outstretched hand.

A tense final few minutes ensued but excellent play from the energetic Nazar (Year 12) taking the ball into the corner meant Sutton could not find a way through the impenetrable wall of yellow, as the final whistle blew and the celebrations began. To complete a brilliant afternoon the side got to celebrate their cup win with midfield stalwart Dhillon (Year 13) who was able to watch the game after his bad injury against Brentwood.

The victory marked the finish line of a wonderful season and was a fantastic end to the Year 13’s footballing careers at Wilson’s. Three Sutton Cups in a row for Wilson’s 1st XI: next year the aim will be to make it four!
