INCLUDING WILSONS V TONBRIDGE

Player of the Week

Jack (Year 10) got his season off to a roaring start with a hat-trick in the first game for the U15A’s; much of the attacking play was based around the consistently excellent Jacob (Yr 10) in midfield. Chris (Yr 13) was a rock at the back in guiding the 2nd XI to an impressive clean sheet in their first fixture. Akin (Yr 8) was everywhere for the U13A’s, causing Hampton problems with his speed and his ability to run with the ball.

Player of the Week is the impressive Joel (Yr 8), who carried on his fine from last season with a goal and a good all-round centre forward performance.

Team of the Week

There were convincing wins for the U16A’s and U15A’s away from home in the first week of fixtures this academic year. Both teams went “goal crazy”, scoring fifteen goals between them. A Year 13 team played in the 2nd XI and ground out a tight 1-0 win with the only goal coming from Philo (Yr 12). Team of the week are the U13A’s who got an impressive draw versus the always strong Hampton. They didn’t give up 2-0 down and fought back in the heat to level the game.

Match Report

Wilson’s 1st XI 2 VS Tonbridge School 2
After a demanding pre-season, it was time for the long awaited first game of the season for the 1st XI. The conditions were unusual for September, but the 32°C afternoon heat couldn’t stop the game from commencing. Wilson’s lined up against a good, physical Tonbridge side. Wilson’s started the game strongly, playing the first 10 minutes almost entirely in Tonbridge’s half, but after failing to capitalise on a good spell of football, Tonbridge began to apply pressure to the home side. Their left winger was a constant threat and his pace and trickery caused problems for the Wilson’s backline. However, a corner from set-piece specialist Harry (Yr 13) found Matthew’s (Yr 13) head, who converted from point blank range - a familiar combination for many years now. This settled the nerves and Wilson’s began to put their foothold on the game once more. It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled, with Bruno (Yr 12) cutting inside on his right foot and firing the ball into the top corner. Wilson’s had their chances to kill the game with Dino having two great chances to make it 3-0, his first went narrowly wide and his second forced the keeper into a fine save. This saw Wilson’s enter half-time with a 2-0 lead.

The second half started fairly evenly, but a foul committed just outside of the box gave Tonbridge a way to get back into the game. A well-worked set piece saw a Tonbridge player receive the ball unmarked at the back post, who delivered it across the goal for the striker to finish. This was soon followed by an excellent strike from their midfielder from 30 yards, which was too powerful for goalkeeper Adhrit (Yr 11) and flew into the roof of the net. In a flash, the visitors had levelled the game up, but there was still plenty of time for Wilson’s to find the winner. We continued to bang on the door, but to no prevail as the Tonbridge goalkeeper and defence were able to shut us out. And with that, the game ended 2-2. Whilst failing to hold onto a lead is always frustrating, there were still many positives to take from the game into the rest of the season, and everyone in the Ist XI is excited to see what they can bring to the table next week!
