Marking Remembrance at Wilson's

In addition to the school's annual Remembrance assemblies, cadets from the CCF took part in Remembrance events at other local and National Remembrance events.

On the Monday of the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday, Lt Col Burton, CSM Kwon and CSM Sivathas - accompanied by The Major General’s Cadet from NW London ACF - attended a Remembrance Reception at 10 Downing Street at which the Prime Minister spoke about service, addressing the veterans, servicemen and cadets in the room. As well as meeting Sir Kier Starmer, the cadets spent time talking with The Chief of The Defence Staff, The Army Sergeant Major, and other guests including Chelsea Pensioners, amongst them a Normandy Veteran.

On Remembrance Sunday, The Contingent paraded with a strength of 70 at Croydon’s Civic Act of Remembrance with Sgt Foo carrying the Corp’s banner and Flight Sgt Verma and Sgt Cole (WHGS) laying wreaths on behalf of the School and The CCF and Lt Col Burton being nominated to escort The Executive Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry to inspect the cadet element of the parade, alongside Wilson’s School CCF he presented cadets from SW London ACF and LaSER ATC.

On Monday 10 November, ten cadets from the Army Section lead by Lt Redmond attended The Mayor of London’s Service of Remembrance, providing ushers for the Civic Mayors of The London Boroughs.

In our Remembrance assemblies, Mr Cole focused on the treatment of soldiers who suffered mental collapse or trauma during the First World War, the absence of any support and in particular, the distressing case of Private Harry Farr. While drawing attention to the greater care serving members of the armed forces receive today and the sterling work charities do to support veterans, he made the case that there is much more to be done. The Last Post sounded, a silence was held and the School Captain, accompanied by members of the CCF, placed a wreath at the school's War Memorial. Together, we remembered all who suffered and died and continue to suffer and die in armed conflict exactly as has been the case at Wilson's since 1919.
