Kamaljit Gill

I am sorry to announce that Mrs Kamaljit Gill, a long standing and much valued member of the school’s staff, died on Friday last, surrounded by her family, following her long and bravely fought battle with cancer.

Mrs Gill joined the IT & Computing Department in 2003, ultimately holding the position of Head of Department and teaching right up until the October 2020 half term. It is no exaggeration to say that she loved Wilson’s and I know that so many Old Wilsonian parents will remember her as an energetic and compassionate form tutor. A huge number of Wilson’s Students have been influenced by her energetic leadership of our extraordinary programme of charitable giving; ‘Wilson’s Got Talent’, collections for the Purley Food Hub, Staff vs Student quizzes, the annual Inter House Cake Competition, Mufti Days; you name it—Kamaljit was behind it, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for the sick and the needy. To her, NON SIBI SED OMNIBUS was not just a motto; it was a way of living.

Four weeks ago the Chair of Governors wrote to Kamaljit asking her permission for a trophy to be awarded at Prize Giving each year in her honour – the Kamaljit Gill Trophy for Charitable Service. Ever someone who wished to enable others to enjoy the limelight rather than stealing it for herself, her surprise and delight at this small gesture, was testament to her extraordinary modesty.

If you have any memories you wish to share with us, please send these to Mrs H. Ware (Head’s PA) either via post (addressing them to the school), or e-mail HW@wilsonsschool.sutton.sch.uk A full tribute will be published in due course.

Kamaljit was my friend and I will miss her enormously. My thoughts and those of the entire Wilson’s community are with her beloved family of whom she was so proud.
