Chess
Chess is hugely popular at Wilson’s, with pupils of all ages enjoying the opportunity to play and compete. The school’s chess clubs are consistently well attended, and this year alone more than 50 pupils have represented Wilson’s in competitive matches, while over 200 pupils hold official English Chess Federation ratings.
Wilson’s has a long-standing reputation for having one of the strongest school chess programmes in the country. Several of our leading players represent England at junior level, and our first team regularly competes at the highest standard. The school takes part in the Briant Poulter League, where we consistently finish among the top teams. This year, Wilson’s won the league title against exceptionally strong opposition, including Hampton School and King's College School.
Our pupils also achieve outstanding success in national competitions. In 2025, Wilson’s won the British Team Chess Challenge and finished a close second in the English Schools' Chess Championship — an exceptional achievement of which the whole school is proud.
Pupils who wish to improve their chess are encouraged to practise regularly by attending the Wednesday chess clubs, competing in tournaments, and playing online. There are also several excellent local clubs, including Coulsdon Chess Club. Students who are keen to compete for the school teams and develop their over-the-board rating are strongly encouraged to join a local club to gain additional experience and competitive practice.
