Prize Giving

A celebration of excellence

THE ANNUAL Prize Giving ceremony took place on Tuesday, with current students and recent leavers awarded prizes to celebrate success in a huge range of fields during the 2018 – 19 academic year. Many of the prizes have been endowed by old boys and former parents, and the Head spoke movingly of how "the past touches the present on these occasions". Our guest speaker for the ceremony was The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Garden of Frognal, whose vivid and entertaining speech dwelled on the need to be magnanimous: the privilege of success and high achievement places a responsibility to be especially kind, and attentive to the wellbeing of others. We are proudest of the boys who demonstrate this. These messages resonated particularly well with speeches given by current students about chess, music, football, and the CCF – four of the most popular co-curricular activities at the school.

The evening began with form prizes for students who have demonstrated kindness and helped to bring the form closer together, working in various ways to improve the experience that their fellow students have at school. This was followed by subject prizes (for students who consistently demonstrate hard work and dedication to the subject, fully exploiting their natural talent and enthusiasm) and prizes for successful participation in e.g. the Duke of Edinburgh Award, drama, and debating, as well as for service to the school and resilience.

With Ms Johnstone's fine spread for recent leavers and their parents, music provided by Chamber Ensemble and Neo Tang (playing Brahms' Sonatensatz), and our cheerful and charismatic speaker, this was a most bracing and festive way to start 2020!
