Inaugural Beckman & Molyneux cups
Over 100 students competed in this year’s inaugural tournaments, which were created not only to provide exciting competition between our students, but also to celebrate the achievements of two long-serving and much loved badminton coaches at Wilson’s.
Mrs Beckman and Mr Molyneux introduced badminton into the curriculum at Wilson’s in the 1990s. Mrs Beckman pioneered the training programme and developed it into what it is today. Her influence is still felt through the many former students who continue to represent local clubs, county teams, and even international sides.
Mr Molyneux, who served at the school for over 35 years before retiring last year, also played a key role in establishing badminton at Wilson’s. He ensured that the sports hall was specifically designed with badminton players in mind and led multiple teams to the National Championships.
By celebrating their achievements through these cups, we hope their names will forever remain part of Wilson’s badminton history.
Two of the competition winners - Atharv (Year 8), winner of the KS3 Beckman Cup, and Yin Ting (Year 11), winner of the KS4 Molyneux Cup - shared their experiences of the tournament below.
Last Friday, Akshaj (Year 7) and I competed in—and won—the inaugural Beckman Cup. The event is named in honour of Karen Beckman, a former England badminton player who won two Commonwealth Games gold medals and two silvers, as well as numerous medals at other major competitions, including the World Championships.
In the semi-finals, we faced Tylor and Matheo (Year 8). The first set got off to a slow start for us, as I struggled to find my rhythm and made several unforced errors. Despite this, we narrowly secured the set 22–20. In the second set, however, we found our form and dominated, winning comfortably 21–9.
In the final, we came up against Sam and Advait (Year 7). It was a thrilling three-set match lasting 40 minutes. We started strongly, taking the first set 21–14, but our opponents responded well, winning the second 21–12. With everything on the line in the deciding set, the pressure was intense and both pairs were within touching distance of victory. Once again, Akshaj and I raised our level at the crucial moment, sealing the set—and the cup—with a 21–16 win.
It was a real honour to take part in the first Beckman Cup, and even more special to come away as its first winners.

This month, we were excited to take part in the KS4 Badminton Doubles Tournament – the Molyneux Cup. Competition was fierce in the group stages, but the pairs that eventually reached the semi-finals were Titus and Jett (Year 10), Kai and Rishit (Year 11), Abhay and Bharath (Year 11), and Vincent and me, Yin Ting (Year 11).
The battle for a place in the final was intense. Vincent and I faced Titus and Jett in a best-of-three match and, after two closely contested 21–16 games, secured our place in the final. In the other semi-final, Kai and Rishit fought through long, demanding rallies, eventually clinching victory in the deciding game with a 21–16 scoreline.
In the final, Vincent and I went head-to-head with Kai and Rishit. The pressure was immense and the rallies were fiercely contested, but after two gruelling sets (21–14 and 21–19), we emerged victorious.
The event was made even more special by the presence of Mr Molyneux, Wilson’s recently retired badminton coach, who came to watch the semi-finals and final. The badminton squad is incredibly grateful for his years of dedication in building the team, and we were delighted to welcome him back to present the Molyneux Cup to the winners.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and to our fantastic badminton coaches for organising the tournament—it was a unique experience that we will never forget.
