Wilson’s Inter-House Chess
150 excited pupils packed into the John Jenkins Hall for the inter- House (and Inter-Form) chess tournament. Almost all the forms in the school were represented, many by the expected team of four players, some with reserves. Others had smaller teams, in some cases just one brave player unsupported by the rest of their form.
Each team played three matches so the maximum possible team score was 12 points. The normal chess "Swiss System" of pairings was used where winning teams played each other as did those who had lost. Chess is no respecter of age and whilst year 7 forms were nervous about being paired with sixth form teams, when play started they showed that they could beat them.
In the inter-house rankings Datchelor set the pace from round 1 and won with 46 points ahead of Hayes second on 40 points and Camberwell third on 39.
The leading form was 8 Brecon with 11 points whilst 8 Hayes were second with 10 points. Indeed it was a very strong performance by the year 8s as 8D and 8S ranked joint third with 10G.
