On Friday, we enjoyed the first mufti day of this academic year. As usual, pupils were invited to wear their own clothes in exchange for a donation to the Ryan MS Therapy Centre in Coulsdon, one of several local charities for which pupils have raised money in recent months.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition that effects the central nervous system. It causes a wide range of symptoms including problems with muscle movement, balance and vision leading to diverse and varying degrees of disability. MS can be a very frightening condition because once diagnosed, a person will not know how affected they will be. Whilst there has been great progress with disease modifying drugs (DMDs) there is still currently no cure. However, we can do things to help people with MS manage the condition to keep mobile and maintain independence, which is why the therapies provided in Coulsdon are so valuable. Anybody may donate directly via the website here: https://ryanmstherapy.org/donate/
Ryan MS Therapy Centre is one of many charities championed by our late colleague, Kamaljit Gill. It is in her honour that we plan to launch a new Charities Committee, chaired by the Charities Prefect, to coordinate future charity fundraising activity. Pupils will learn much more about the committee's work and how they can get involved next half term!
Keep a lookout for details of both our Charity Orchestral Concert and Carol Service (both in December), which this year will be raising money for Centrepoint, a charity that provides accommodation and support to homeless people aged 16–25.
