Wilson’s has always taken great pride in its sport, with a strong tradition of performance and high levels of participation. It is therefore with great delight that we report that the school has been listed by School Sport magazine in the Top 100 Sporting Schools. This award is based on the performance of our individuals and teams in a range of national competitions across a number of sports. We would have been listed even higher if rates of participation were rewarded!
Whilst we have always celebrated achievements on the national stage, the 2019/20 was a particularly successful year. The U12A’s reached the quarter final of the National Elite Cup in Football, whilst the U16 Squash team missed out on reaching the National Finals by just two points! Four teams did manage to reach the National Finals, and for both the U18 Football and U18 Squash teams this was for the first time in the school’s history. In keeping with our success in Badminton over a number of recent years, the U14 and U16 teams also made the National Finals.
Unfortunately the first lockdown period prevented our Squash and Badminton teams competing in the Finals. The U18 Football team had to wait seven months to play the Final and, with their momentum slightly lost, they were beaten by a very strong Repton team. Their teamwork, commitment and determination made Wilson’s proud. The lockdown also prevented our summer sports from having the opportunity to emulate this success, with expectations high for some strong Cricket, Athletics and Tennis teams.
Well done to all pupils who participate in clubs, represent the school, and indeed compete at the highest level. We can’t wait to be back in school and for sporting life to resume as soon as possible!
